Exploring Global Opportunities with Edith Cowan University: A Visit to Arura Academy

Here at Karma Educational Consultancy & Placement Firm (Karma ECPF), we are very proud to connect Bhutanese students with world class education. To further this vision, recently with the Edith Cowan University (ECU), Australia we organized a stimulating session at Arura Academy of Health Sciences, Phuntsholing, Bhutan.

It was presented by Miss Choki Lham, Regional Manager for ECU in Bhutan who explained the benefits of ECU’s academic success, campus life and pathways that ECU has for students from Bhutan to attend higher education in Australia. Her lessons were tailor-made for students who wished to travel to the world and be as committed to the ideals and aspirations of Bhutan.

Highlights of the Session

1. Introduction to Edith Cowan University:

Miss Choki Lham told the students about ECU and the importance of innovation, quality education, and international students. The talk featured health sciences programmes, the areas of focus of many of the Institute’s Bhutanese youth.

2. Opportunities for Bhutanese Students:

She spoke about personalized support packages for Bhutanese students at ECU like scholarships, student mentoring and cultural exchange so they would feel right at home during study abroad.

3. Importance of a Global Perspective:

The workshop highlighted how the education they receive at ECU can prepare students for the world in which we live and thrive.

Empowering Students with Knowledge

The session at Arura Academy was not about choice in a course; it was about equipping the student with information that can help them decide for themselves what to do in the future. Karma ECPF is committed to encourage students to live their passion and have respect for Bhutanese culture and Tradition.

Thanks to Miss Choki Lham for her knowledge and to the students and teachers of Arura Academy for their support.

Shared about the Challenges

In the session, Mr Gyamtsho told about going to visit his sister in Australia. Although they lived under the same roof, they had schedules so full that interaction was an indulgence. His sister would get up at 4:00am, long before he was awake, and get home by 11:00pm, when he was already asleep.

This story brought home one of the most fundamental facts about life in Australia: you live on a wage.

  • Demanding Work and Study Routine

School, working part time and being single are too many. Students cram in early morning lectures, intensive study sessions and working part-time to live on, and do not have much free time for family or relaxation.

  • Less Social Interaction

The city life of Australia is one in which people have busy lives and no real time for unwinding. This is a big change for Bhutanese students who’ve grown up in small groups.

  • Cultural and Environmental Differences

The idea of settling in to a new culture, climate and diet is scary. It’s even more difficult to make these adjustments when you are disconnected from family and friends.

  • Homesickness and Loneliness

Foreign country is daunting as you’re so far away from home and there is a lot of pressure and isolation during festival and Especial events.

Managing one’s time and getting involved in the community are the key to overcoming these challenges, Mr Gyamtsho pointed out. Here are some tips for students to get used to the new place:

Use Your Time In The Right Place: Set deadlines and make sure you have the proper work/life balance.

• Make Connections: Join student societies or Bhutanese societies in Australia to find home.

Connect: Constant contact with family and friends back home helps you avoid feeling lonely.

Live it: See adversity as an experiment in transformation.
